Protect your summer sweet tooth
Nothing quite screams summer like the chorus of an ice cream van from two roads away. Sadly, many adults can’t make the most of World Ice Cream Day (July 16th), all because of sensitive teeth.
One study found up to 42% of young adults suffer pain because of sensitivities. Over time your tooth’s protective enamel layer can wear away. Underneath this is a much more sensitive tissue called dentine. When cold food or drink hits the dentine layer, they stimulate nerve fibres in your teeth. In turn you feel a short and sharp pain that can be uncomfortable.
There are ways to manage teeth sensitivity over time, allowing you to enjoy your 99 Flake in peace.
Everyday oral health
Consider how you brush your teeth – you could actually be doing it too hard. Brushing this way can strip away the protective enamel, or cause gum recession. Try brushing gently, with a soft bristled toothbrush. Going slower will also ensure you apply a full coverage.
Simple changes can make a large impact. Swap out your everyday products with a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. Sensitive toothpastes can provide effective relief over time with continued use. Try different brands to find one that works best for you.
Fluoride Treatments
If sensitive toothpastes don’t work your dentist could prescribe a high-fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a mineral that helps protect and re-harden (remineralise) weakened enamel. You might already take in small amounts of fluoride in your oral care routine, diet or everyday tap water.
Consider using fluoride toothpastes and mouth rinses that your dentist recommends. Check with your dentist or dental hygienist/therapist how long you should use them to make the most of the effects.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a short treatment that can take as little as a lunch break to complete. A dentist can add a layer of tough resin to the most vulnerable areas of teeth. It is generally a cosmetic treatment to help fill gaps between teeth and rebuild a smile. As it re-covers weakened enamel it can reduce sensitivity, making it functional too.
The resin is colour matched to your teeth for a natural appearance. It provides protection and a bright smile for up to 3-4 years before needing a replacement. Bonding is not particularly invasive, and offers an affordable solution to restore the teeth and prevent further teeth sensitivity.
